Vision-guided pick-and-place cell

A robotic arm that finds mixed parts with a camera and sorts them.

Development stage

Stage 5 of 8: prototype.

  1. Problem identification
  2. Research
  3. System architecture
  4. Simulation
  5. Prototype
  6. Testing
  7. Validation
  8. Production

Problem

Manual sorting of small mixed parts is slow, repetitive and error-prone.

Solution

A camera and detection model locate each part; calibrated hand-eye transforms let the arm pick and place it in the right bin.

Technology

  • Computer vision
  • Robotic manipulation
  • Inverse kinematics

Hardware

  • Multi-axis arm
  • USB camera
  • Gripper
  • Controller

Software

  • Python
  • OpenCV
  • Detection model
  • Kinematics solver

Target outcomes

  • Reliable detection of the part set
  • Consistent picks across the working area
  • A reusable cell for training and demonstrations
